Annual Report from the Office of Safe & Supportive Schools
The Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) Act of 2007 provides that the Commissioner of Education report annually to the Governor and General Assembly "concerning the prevalence of violent and disruptive incidents in the public schools, and the effectiveness of school programs undertaken to reduce violence and assure the safety and security of students and school personnel.”
The reports below present an update on the Department of Education’s progress in implementing the provisions of the Act, a summary of available violent or serious incident data, and an overview of the promising strategies being implemented in Tennessee schools.
School Health Profile
The School Health Profile, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a survey of the status of health education as reported by middle and high school principals and lead health education teachers.
The School Health Profile has been administered in Tennessee schools in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
The survey data helps the Tennessee Department of Education to develop programs, allocate resources, and provide staff development opportunities for teachers. The survey monitors the current status of:
- School health education requirements and content
- Physical education requirements
- Asthma management activities
- Food service
- Competitive foods practices and policies
- Family and community involvement in school health programs
- School health policies related to HIV/AIDS, tobacco use prevention, violence prevention and physical activity

Status of Minority Teachers in Tennessee
The The Status of Minority Teachers in Tennessee is an annual report on the status of minority teachers Information is collected from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, Tennessee Education Association, public and private colleges and universities with teacher licensure programs, and local school systems.

Virtual Education Report
The virtual education report is an annual report that provides detail on the academic and operational status of virtual schools and virtual programs in Tennessee.
Youth Risk Behavior Survey
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is one component of the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with representatives from state and local departments of education and health, 19 other federal agencies and national education and health organizations.
The Tennessee Department of Education conducts the Youth Risk Behavior Survey during each odd numbered year.
The YRBS data is weighted and the results can be generalized to all students in Tennessee public schools in grades 9-12.
