Energy Education Opportunities

2013 Energy Camp for Teachers

The 2013 Energy Camp for Teachers is now accepting applications. Sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Office of Energy Programs, these four-day summer camps are free and offer a fun and educational experience for K-12 teachers.

Conducted by the nationally recognized Tennessee Energy Education Program, the 2013 Energy Camp offers activities presented by award-winning energy educators and professionals. Camp activities will address Tennessee Science curriculum standards and will incorporate Common Core Standards for Reading /Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition, special breakout sessions will be conducted with grade-level clusters to ensure that all participating teachers leave with ideas ready for their classrooms.

The camps will be offered at three locations during the summer of 2013, including the inns at Montgomery Bell, Pickwick Landing and Fall Creek Falls. Lodging, meals, camp materials, field trips and a $400 “mini” grant will be provided for participating teachers. Each camp will include a one-day field trip to energy-related sites. The 2013 dates, locations and tentative field trip plans are:

  • June 11-14: Montgomery Bell State Park Inn – A tour of TVA’s Cumberland Fossil plant, visit to the Homeplace 1850 at Land Between the Lakes and a visit to the Kentucky Dam Visitor Center.
  • June 18-21: Pickwick Landing State Park Inn – TVA’s Lagoon Combined Combustion plant, UT Research Center and the Cowan House.
  • July 9-12:  Fall Creek Falls State Park Inn – TVA’s Watts Bar Nuclear Power plant, Watts Bar Hydroelectric dam and Genera Energy Biofuel Production.

Space at the 2013 Energy Camp for Teachers is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis – so, early registration is strongly suggested. While the topic of energy is best suited for science teachers, educators in all subjects and grade levels may attend and schools may send up to two teachers. Teachers who attended energy camps in 2012 are eligible but must also submit a NEED project.

For more information or to obtain an application, please contact Chyrall Dawson at Chyrall.Dawson@tn.gov or call the Energy Hotline at 800-342-1340. The application deadline is April 12, 2013.
