Carroll Cabin Barrens SNA hosts Cedar Barren Ecology Hike on Sept. 1
(West) Join Allan Trently, Stewardship Ecologist, Natural Areas Program on a 2.5 mile hike exploring some of the treeless barrens of the area. Some of the hike will be off-trail. The hike is to be considered moderate though some may find it strenuous. Alan will discuss the ecology and management of the barrens and will identify animals and plants during the hike. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and a snack, bring binoculars if you have them, and dress appropriately for the weather. We will not go in the event of inclement weather. Fort Loudoun hosts 18th Century Trade Faire on Sept. 8 & 9
(East) The Fort Loudoun State Historic Park and the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum are partnering for the Great Island Festival, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. ET each day. The Great Island Festival is actually a series of concurrent events, designed to take visitors back in time to an 18th century Trade Faire and a Cherokee encampment. The 18th century Trade Faire at Fort Loudoun will feature encampments of soldiers, settlers and American Indians. There will be demonstrations throughout the day in artillery and musketry, along with several battle and skirmish re-enactments. Merchants and artisans will be on hand to peddle food and wares reminiscent of the time. Admission is $5 for adults aged 12 and up; children 11 and under will be admitted free of charge. BRAT (TN State Parks Bicycle Ride across TN) on Sept. 8-15
Welcome to the 23rd annual Bicycle Ride Across Tennessee (BRAT 2012). This seven-day ride will start at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville, TN and features a combination of rolling hills, valleys, and some flat terrain. The tour will include a balance of some long-distance rides and some short distance days - designed to challenge expert cyclists, while accommodating recreational riders. Riders will camp overnight at four Tennessee State Parks along the route, including Cumberland Mountain, Standing Stone, Pickett, and Harrison Bay. The City of Kingston will host one overnight stay at Fort Southwest Point. One layover day is planned at Cumberland Mountain State Park, giving cyclists an opportunity to sightsee - including nature hikes and canoeing. Henry Horton hosts Hunters Run for the Hungry 5 and 10 K on Sept. 14
(Middle) Proceeds from this annual 5K and 10K are used to process venison donated to the Hunters for the Hungry Program. The processed venison is then donated to local food banks in Marshall County. Frozen Head hosts Volunteer Trail Day on Sept. 15
(Plateau) 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. ET. The public is invited to join us in maintaining the park's trails. Tools will be provided. Volunteers should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions including rain and snow. Bring food, water and a daypack. Some areas require hiking one to two miles in rugged terrain. First time volunteers must complete a liability form. Located in the beautiful Cumberland Mountains of East Tennessee, Frozen Head State Park is easy to find. Pickett hosts Volunteer Day on Sept. 15
(Plateau) Participate in trail work, planting native species, litter clean up and other park projects. Meet park personnel and the Friends group at the park office at 9 a.m. CT. Reelfoot Lake hosts Round House Reunion on Sept. 16
(West) Reefoot Lake State Park welcomes the return of the Round House Reunion. During the 1950's and the 1960's, the Bluebank Round House was the place to be at Reelfoot Lake. People came from miles and miles to listen to the music, meet friends, and enjoy Reelfoot Lake. Many friendships and romances started at the Round House and many happy memories were created there. Pickett hosts CCC Statue Dedication on Sept. 20
(Plateau) Join us for our 75 Anniversary Celebration and the dedication of our bronze, life-size CCC Worker Statue, located adjacent to the Pickett CCC museum. The statue honors and commemorates the hard work and accomplishments of the Civilian Conservation Corps who were instrumental in the development of the park. When the CCC was established on March 31, 1933, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a CCC Worker Statue was created to be placed across the nation, primarily in sites where the CCC men worked. Short Springs SNA hosts Tree Identification Hike on Sept. 22
(Middle) Possessing the ability to identify dominant tree species adds to our understanding and appreciation of forested ecosystems. Enjoy the first day of autumn by walking the natural area's trails and learning about Tennessee's diverse forest communities. During the three - four hours afield, participants will not only encounter a number of tree species, but will discover some leaf, twig and bark characteristics essential for woody plant identification. We'll also discuss how topographic and other environmental variables influence forest species composition. Attendees should bring water and snacks. Ghost River SNA hosts Guided Canoe Trip on Sept. 22
(West) Participants are to meet at the Bateman Bridge takeout in Moscow at 9.30 a.m. CT where most vehicles will be left. There will be a shuttle to take people to the launch point at Yager Rd in La Grange where the paddling trip should commence at 10 a.m. The trip will focus on the history, diversity and beauty of the natural area. The float is about 9 miles and has some fast sections so some paddling experience is recommended. Participants should bring lunch and water to drink. Sunscreen, bug spray and carpooling are recommended. The canoe trip will last approximately 6-7 hours. More detailed information will be provided upon reservations. Reservations are required. Old Stone Fort hosts Old Stone Fort Knapp-In on Sept. 28-30
(Middle) A celebration of the ancient arts and archaeoskills, the weekend's main activities and special programming begin at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday and will run until approximately 4:30 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public. Flint knappers of all skill levels will begin arriving at the park on Friday and will set up on the roof deck of the museum to exchange ideas and materials and demonstrate their craft to the public. There will be atlatl competitions on Saturday and Sunday, with opportunities for everyone to try this ancient skill. Other demonstrations include Native American pottery construction, shell carving, basketry, fire making, native plant use, cordage production and many other primitive skills. There also will be special presentations throughout Saturday on topics such as Southeastern archaeology and prehistory. The Old Stone Fort is a 2000-year-old Native American ceremonial site, which consists of nearly 4,000 feet of low, wall-like mounds enclosing nearly 50 acres. Virgin Falls SNA hosts NPLD Stewardship Day on Sept. 29
Celebrate National Public Lands Day! Please meet at the Virgin Falls parking lot at 9 a.m. CT for a day of hiking and packing out trash. The walk down to beautiful Virgin Falls is 4 miles and the trail is narrow and steep in places. We will pass two smaller waterfalls along the way. We will pick up trash on the 4 miles hike back out so plan for a total 8 mile strenuous hike. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a lunch and lots of water! Walls of Jericho SNA hosts NPLD Fall Hike & Trail Cleanup on Sept. 29
Enjoy National Public Lands Day with a journey through the early fall beauty at the Walls of Jericho State Natural Area in Franklin County. This strenuous 8-mile hike descends 600 feet into the "Walls" and continues along the creek to an amazing canyon of sheer rock bluffs, caves, and waterfalls. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy boots, and bring plenty of water and lunch. This hike is strenuous and participants should be in good physical condition. Hampton Creek Cove SNA hosts NPLD Overmountain Hike on Sept. 29
Chris Coxen, Southern Appalachian Highland Conservancy Field Ecologist will lead a loop hike on National Public Lands Day, from Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area through the Cherokee National Forest to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, returning via the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. We will meet at 10 a.m. ET. The hike will originate at the Natural Area parking lot and traverse fields and actively grazed pastures, then follow the Birchfield Trail along the Left Prong of Hampton Creek through a northern hardwood forest community where yellow birch, striped maple, northern red oak, and tulip popular are dominant species. From the upper reaches of the Birchfield Trail, the hike will follow an old woods road until it reaches the Appalachian Trail, where it will turn west on the AT to Yellow Mountain Gap. At this junction, the hike route will turn north onto the Overmountain Victory Trail, commemorating the historic route of the Overmountain Men in their march to the Revolutionary War's 1780 Battle of King's Mountain, thereupon returning to the parking lot. Hike is 7 miles round trip, includes an elevation gain of 2100 ft and is rated difficult. Hikers should bring lunch, water, high energy snacks, sturdy hiking footwear (no sandals or open-toed shoes), hat, jacket, rain gear, and sunscreen. Long pants are advised. Stillhouse Hollow Falls SNA hosts NPLD Stewardship Day on Sept. 29
Join Allan J. Trently, Tennessee Division of Natural Areas at Stillhouse Hollow Falls State Natural Area, a 90-acre state natural area in Maury County. The natural area is named for its most significant feature, Stillhouse Hollow Falls, which can be seen by walking approximately 2/3 of a mile along the Stillhouse Hollow Falls trail. A portion of the trail runs along a steep hillside. This trail section is prone to erosion. The plan for the event is to put in erosion control timbers along the trail. A pair of gloves and sturdy footwear is recommended. Please bring a lunch and water for the event. Consult the weather forecast; the event will be cancelled in case of bad weather. Ozone Falls SNA hosts NPLD Clean-up on Sept. 29
(Plateau) A perfect way to spend an autumn morning - celebrating National Public Lands Day at Ozone Falls! Enjoy the picturesque beauty of this natural area while helping to maintain trails by removing invasive plants and picking up trash from 9 a.m. to noon. Equipment will be provided. Please bring food and water and wear sturdy shoes. Feel free to work all morning or just a couple of hours. Directions: From Crossville travel East on I-40 and exit at the Crab Orchard exit. Turn left off the exit ramp and go to the intersection of U.S. Highway 70. From Knoxville go west on I-40 and exist at Crab Orchard. From Crab Orchard exit, turn right on U.S. Highway 70 going east. The program will begin with cannons firing and a hike led by living history interpreters across the battle site. After this short hike, guests are welcome to visit the Living History Civil War Camp where there will be rifle demonstrations, re-enactors and interpretive programs about life in the camp. Cove Lake hosts Louie Bluie Festival on Sept. 29
(Plateau) This all-day family-fun festival features three stages of music including traditional old-time, blues, gospel, mountain jazz, and bluegrass, plus storytelling and theater and our kid's fun zone with lots of activities for the children. High quality art and handmade crafts will be sold in the craft village, and a judged art and quilt show will be in the recreation center. Regional food vendors will be serving up a mouthwatering array of authentic Southern cooking, East Tennessee style. The Louie Bluie Festival is named in honor of Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong (1909-2003), a LaFollette native and internationally acclaimed string band musician who grew up in LaFollette in the 1920s and became one of the nation's finest string band musicians, as well as artist, storyteller, and writer.
