Opportunity for 50% Cost-Shared Commercial Sealed Source Disposal

June 30, 2013 is the Deadline for Cost-Shared Collection and Disposal of Certain Class A, B, and C Radioactive Sealed Sources

 

Tennessee has been notified that the of Conference Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) Source Collection and Threat Reduction Program (SCATR) is offering radioactive sealed source generators in Tennessee 50% cost-shared collection, processing, and disposal for certain commercial sealed sources. The SCATR collections are targeting Class A sealed sources for cost-shared disposal at the EnergySolutions Clive, Utah commercial disposal facility, but will also collect and dispose of Class B and C sources from the same generator locations on a 50% cost-shared basis.

In order to participate in this effort, generators must register their disused sealed sources with the Off-Site Source Recovery Project (OSRP) by June 30, 2013.

 

Please also verify the point of contact information for any sources you may already have registered with OSRP. Registration of sources with OSRP does not constitute a commitment by the generator to participate in the initiative, but is necessary to be contacted with more information on the opportunity.

 

CRCPD is contracting with certified brokers for the collection, processing, and disposal of sources under this initiative.  A representative from the certified broker will contact OSRP-registered generators in Tennessee after June 30, 2013 with further details on pricing, scheduling, and eligible sources.

Please note that CRCPD/SCATR cost-shared sealed source disposal opportunities are limited.  We recommend that licensees with disused sealed sources register these sources as soon as practicable and carefully consider participation in the current initiative.

The Division of Radiological Health is responsible for protecting Tennesseans and the environment from the hazards associated with ionizing radiation. This responsibility encompasses regulating the use and possession of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines within the state, as well as responding to accidents involving radiation. In addition, the Division monitors the environment for radiation, especially around nuclear facilities and other major radioactive material users.

The Division is comprised of four sections as follows:

The Licensing/Registration/Planning Section licenses medical, academic, and industrial facilities to possess x-ray equipment. A license is issued only upon demonstration by the applicant of the adequacy of required radiation protection programs to protect workers, the public, and the environment from any hazards of radiation presented by the proposed use of the radioactive material. See the Environmental Permitting Handbook for more information.

The Inspection and Enforcement Section inspects licensed and registered facilities to determine compliance with state regulations and special conditions of their licenses or registration. Staff of this section ensure correction of items of non-compliance, and prepare requests for escalated enforcement.

The Technical Services Section performs ambient and site specific environmental monitoring, provides personnel monitoring and instrument calibration services for the Division, conducts emergency response training for the Division and others, provides oversight for Tennessee's low-level radioactive waste activities, and handles special projects.

The Administrative Section handles Division budget, personnel, purchasing, secretarial/clerical support, fee collection/accounts receivable/fee related enforcement, contracts, technical training/travel arrangements, and reports to federal and other state agencies.
