Division of Underground Storage Tanks

Federal law requires states to inspect each underground storage tank at least once every three years. The Division of Underground Storage Tanks has inspectors in each of TDEC’s eight field offices and our inspectors are at your sites and the sites you serve on a regular basis. The Division has used compliance guidance documents for many years to give direction to tank owners, service companies, and division inspectors about certain rules and methods, and these documents have served everyone well.

However, now many of our compliance guidance documents are aging, because they have not been updated since the late 1990s. While they are still useful, the Division has increased its knowledge of the topics and we routinely receive increasingly detailed questions from the regulated community that can be addressed by updating the documents. The division also believes that having the documents updated will facilitate a more standardized inspection.

The division committed to the regulated community when this process started to place the draft guidance on our website and ask the regulated community and service companies for their input.

Updating the guidance is not a rule making process so there is no deadline that must be met for your response, but we would like to get everybody’s input by the end of May.
