South Fork Holston River Watershed Map

Located in East Tennessee, the Tennessee portion of South Fork Holston River Watershed includes parts of Carter, Greene, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan and Washington counties. The Group 2 portion of the watershed just includes parts of Carter, Johnson and Sullivan counties. It drains 551 square miles in Tennessee and empties to the Holston River. There are 80 rare plant and animal species in the Tennessee Portion of the South Fork Holston River Watershed.

Other sites within the South Fork Holston River Watershed include:

  • Appalachian Caverns, giant chambers and formations in Blountville.
  • America’s First Frontier Heritage Tourism Area, a historic district that includes the home of President Andrew Johnson.
  • Little Oak Recreation Area, part of Cherokee National Forests, with trails near South Holston Lake.

In addition, many local interpretive areas are common, most notably, Steele Creek Park and Nature Center in Bristol.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the U.S. Forest Service jointly manage the Cherokee National Forest. At 630,000 acres, it is the largest tract of public land in the state.

The South Fork Holston River Watershed is located in Tennessee and Virginia. The Group 3 portion of the Tennessee portion of the South Fork Holston River Watershed (34.9 percent of the entire Tennessee portion; 16.8 percent of the entire watershed) includes parts of Greene, Hawkins, Sullivan and Washington counties. It drains approximately 1,179 square miles, 559 square miles of which are in Tennessee (194 square miles of which are Group 3), and empties to the Holston River Watershed.

Other sites within the South Fork Holston River Watershed include:

  • Boone Reservation is located along both banks of the South Holston River (Mile 18.6 to 35.0), Watauga River, and Beaver Creek. The reservation has several privately owned commercial marinas and docks on the lake.
  • Fort Patrick Henry is named after the colonial fort in honor of the revolutionary war era Virginian. Also called Long Island Station, the original fort is located where Kingsport is today.
  • Warriors’ Path State Park is named for the nearby war and trading path used by the Cherokee. The 950-acre park on Patrick Henry Reservoir was acquired from TVA in 1952. Learn more at http://tnstateparks.com/parks/about/warriors-path.
