The Mississippi River is the second-longest river in the U.S., with a length of 2,320 miles. It has the third largest drainage basin in the world, exceeded in size only by the watersheds of the
Amazon and Congo Rivers. The Mississippi River Basin covers more than 1.24 million square miles, includes all or parts of 31 states and two Canadian provinces. It drains 41 percent of the land area of the 48 contiguous states to the Gulf of Mexico.
