Letter from the First Lady

Since moving to Nashville, Bill and I have enjoyed living in the Tennessee Residence. We feel privileged and blessed to live in a home with such history. We consider ourselves stewards of the home for now and for the future—it is Tennessee’s home and it is open to visitors.

As First Lady, one thing I get to be involved in is the Tennessee Executive Residence Foundation. A few years ago, the Tennessee Residence underwent a much-needed renovation. So we are picking up where they left off to begin the next phase of the master plan—a landscape renovation and restoration project.

The project is being led by landscape architect, Ben Page, who is a native Tennessean—and we’re all very excited about his master plan to restore the Tennessee Residence grounds back to its original design and health. Ben Page was chosen to work on this project for many reasons. He specializes in residential landscape architecture. He has an appreciation for the historical influences on a property. He has worked on many impressive projects, including a landscape renovation at the official residence of the Vice President of the United States. His work has been published nationally and featured on HGTV, and he has received numerous awards throughout his career.

In October of 2011, I hosted a luncheon to share the master plan and to kickoff the fundraising. Phase I of the project was completed in fall of 2012. We entered Phase II of the landscape project, including the addition of a kitchen and cutting garden, in February. It was a terrific start, but there’s still a lot to do!

The Tennessee Residence is a beloved treasure for our state and we are excited for the progress in our project to restore and preserve the beautiful landscape that surrounds the Residence. I hope that you will visit the TN Residence Blog frequently for updates, including photographs of the project and exciting announcements about sponsorships and events!
