Department of Labor and Workforce Development
Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Michael E. Magill states, "With Tennessee teens being our most valuable resource, one of the most important goals that our department has is to protect young workers so that they will have the safest possible environment in which to work. We are pleased to join hands with the U.S. Department of Labor in this most worthwhile endeavor." According to Magill, the agency is involved in an outreach campaign to help employers and the general public learn more about the child labor laws. Child labor law specialists are speaking to groups such as students in the classroom, teachers, and employers across the state. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development recently partnered with the Department of Education in a mass mailing to school counselors to heighten awareness of the Tennessee Youth Peddling Law. The agency continues to work one-on-one with employers through compliance visits and inspections. For your information, a copy of Governor Sundquist’s proclamation is enclosed. For information about child labor laws, please see the attached child labor poster, a portion of which has been reproduced for easy access.
