Around 25 elevator inspectors are employed by the Elevator Division of the Tennessee Department of Labor. Twice a year they inspect every elevator in the state – passenger and freight – as well as escalators, dumbwaiters, ski lifts, and trams, amounting to 20,000 inspections annually.

The division also conducts initial inspections on new buildings to make sure elevators are installed properly. An elevator cannot be operated until the Elevator Division inspects it and assigns a number. State and code laws require that elevators be maintained in good condition. Inspectors check safety devices, the complete hoistway, and limit and stop switches.

In addition to acceptance inspections and routine inspections, elevator inspectors conduct accident reports.
