Premium notices coming soon

In mid-March, employers will be notified of their premium rate and reminded to file the 1st quarter 2013 Premium and Wage Report by April 30, 2013.  Employers who use a third-party tax preparer or file via the TN Premium and Wage Reporting System (TNPAWS) will likewise receive a letter containing the premium rate and due date of the report.

Third lowest tax table rate
to remain in effect

Tennessee employers will continue to pay taxes at the same rate for the first two quarters of 2013 that they paid for the third and fourth quarters of 2012. The Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund balance on December 31, 2012, was $552,849,803, meaning for experience-rated employers with a positive reserve, the Table 3 rate will be retained through June 30, 2013, when the Trust Fund is read again.

Jobs4TN Online can help small employers

In the last “Tennessee Employer,” we asked readers what they would like to see in this newsletter. One employer wants to know what a small employer can get from a big Web site, i.e., Jobs4TN Online, which is the question we’re focusing on here.

Jobs4TN Online can save employers money in market research and recruiting activities. On the home page www.jobs4tn.gov, Business Solutions and Labor Market Information are especially helpful for smaller employers.

Jobs4TN Online has a robust employer database with contact information for particular businesses. If an employer is looking for specific businesses to sell to for a marketing campaign, for example, he can go to Industry Data under Labor Market Information, then Employers under Current Data Analysis and request local employer sites by industry or occupation within certain geographical areas.

Maybe you are an employer looking for candidates for a job opening. Currently Jobs4TN Online contains 30,000 to 40,000 résumés and will soon have more. Go to Business Solutions and Looking for Employees to tailor a request to look at résumés.

To list a position, you must first register as an employer at Post a Job under Business Solutions; then complete the requirements for the opening you wish to fill. You can search by skill level the jobseekers who are registered. Jobs4TN Online also provides templates for posting jobs to speed up the process.

Labor Market Information contains comparative wage data helpful to employers. Under Business Solutions an employer can see training available in his area, schools in a certain county, and trained graduates/program completers he might hire.

Take a few moments to become familiar with www.jobs4tn.gov. The site can save you time by being a virtual recruiter for your business, and you will save money in not having to advertise.

2012 unemployment facts

  • Those people most impacted by unemployment in 2012 were in the 45-54 age group.
  • The manufacturing sector continued to be the leader in Tennessee layoffs for 2012; the utilities sector had the fewest layoffs.
  • Production was the single largest position affected by layoffs in 2012.
Employer Outreach
Electronic response system demonstrated for employers

Employers in three counties took part in a pilot project January 24 to find out firsthand the benefits of responding electronically to the department’s requests for separation information regarding claimants who are filing for unemployment insurance.

Selected employers from Hickman, Perry, and Lewis counties visited the Career Coach at the Howenwald Career Center to learn how to use the State Information Data Exchanges System (SIDES) E-Response Web site for exchanging information with the Department of Labor.

SIDES E-Response is free, fast, and paperless. An employer submits information quickly and accurately, reducing the probability of overpayments.

The pilot project was used to increase awareness of the SIDES E-Response Web site and may be taken to other areas of the state. Click the logo above to learn more about SIDES.



Regulations and Compliance
Proof of legal workforce now required of most all employers

Beginning January 1, 2013, all employers with six or more employees in Tennessee must comply with the Tennessee lawful Employment Act. The intent of this Act is to have a lawful workforce.

The legislation requires employers to enroll and verify employment eligibility of all newly hired employees either through the E-Verify program or by providing specific identity and employment authorization documents.

E-verify is an Internet-based system that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. It is fast, free, and easy to use. E-Verify compares information from an employee’s Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) to data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility.

TOSHA reminder
for reporting accidents

Employers are required by law to report all workplace fatalities or catastrophes (three or more employees hospitalized from one incident) within eight hours of occurrence. The toll free number to call to report the incident is 1-800-249-8510. To report a fatality or catastrophe after hours, call Federal OSHA at 1-800-321-OSHA.

The following information is to be included in the report:

  • The establishment name
  • The location of the incident
  • The time of the incident
  • The number of fatalities or hospitalized employees
  • The names of injured employees
  • A contact person and phone number
  • A brief description of the incident
