TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE PROVIDES ANALYSIS
OF AUGUST 2013 COLLECTIONS

NASHVILLE - August 2013 collections of the Tennessee Department of Revenue were $838,921,920, an increase of $24,122,162 or 3.0 percent from August 2012 collections.

Sales and use tax collections totaled $590,044,887, an increase of $21,325,915 or 3.8 percent from August 2012 collections.

Collections from the retail trade group increased 4.2 percent. Items with significant changes include:

  • Miscellaneous retail stores: up 13.1 percent
  • Motor vehicle dealers and service stations: up 6.9 percent (with a 5.3 percent increase in the new, used motor vehicle sub-category item)
  • Building materials: up 11.1 percent
  • Eating & drinking places: up 3.0 percent
  • General merchandise stores: down 4.0 percent

Collections from the service group decreased 0.2 percent from August 2012 led by losses in business services (6.7 percent) and hotel and lodging places (6.0 percent).

Collections from the non-retail, non-services group increased 1.8 percent led by gains in manufacturing (11.0 per cent) and wholesale trade (5.0 percent). Partially offsetting were loses in electric, gas & sanitary services (6.7 percent) and communications (3.3 percent).

Consumer use tax collections were $456,497, a decrease of $28,201 or 5.8 percent from August 2012.

Franchise and excise tax collections were $31,655,323, a decrease of $3,788,250 or 10.7 percent compared to the collection in August 2012.

Privilege tax collections were $24,258,202, an increase of $8,429,694 or 53.3 percent compared to August 2012.

Motor vehicle registration tax collections were $22,224,435, an increase of $1,570,929 or 7.6 percent compared to August 2012.

Motor vehicle fuel tax collections were $11,320,010, an increase of $1,568,550 or 16.1 percent compared to August 2012.

Business tax collections were $18,673,684, an increase of $1,333,242 or 7.7 percent compared to August 2012.

Inheritance, gift & estate tax collections were $8,666,459, a decrease of $3,513,187 or 28.8 percent compared to August 2012.

Tobacco tax collections were $23,308,217, a decrease of $1,462,122 or 5.9 percent compared to August 2012.

Gasoline tax collections were $50,649,024, a decrease of $1,381,805 or 2.7 percent compared to August 2012.

TVA – In Lieu of tax collections were $27,297,241, a decrease of $1,364,651 or 4.8 percent compared to August 2012.

The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws established by the legislature and the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department of Revenue collects approximately 87 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2013 fiscal year, the department collected $11.7 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, the Department of Revenue collects taxes for local, county and municipal governments. During the 2013 fiscal year, local government collections by the Department of Revenue exceeded $2.2 billion. In collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
