Group Hosting Charity Race Faces $10,000 Penalty Following Tennessee Department of State Investigation

Challenge Nation, a Washington D.C.-based company, is facing $10,000 in civil penalties for soliciting contributions of behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee without the group’s knowledge or consent. Challenge Nation sponsors “urban adventure races” – which essentially are scavenger hunts - in cities across the country. Challenge Nation has a race scheduled in Nashville Sept. 12. In promotional material for the event, Challenge Nation stated that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee would receive a portion of the proceeds from the event. People who live in the Nashville area are familiar with J. Percy Priest Lake and Dam, but they may not know much about the man for whom they are named. Soon, though, people from all over the state will have an opportunity to learn more about the life and accomplishments of this influential Tennessean. The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA), a division of the Tennessee Department of State, provides public access to state records and collections of private manuscripts. The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) has introduced a new tool to help readers find the perfect “next book.” TEL has partnered with Gale, a division of Cengage Learning that is recognized as a leader in providing electronic research and educational resources, to offer Books & Authors, an Internet resource that offers a new way to explore the endless possibilities and combinations of books, authors and topics. TEL is a virtual library that provides free access for Tennesseans to thousands of magazines, scholarly journals, newspapers, podcasts and videos – as well as hundreds of academic tutorials and practice exams. Department of State to Provide Election Night Updates on Web

Results from Tennessee’s Aug. 5 elections will be updated periodically at the Tennessee Department of State web site on election night after numbers are reported by county election officials. The results will be unofficial until they have been certified by the election commissions in each of Tennessee’s 95 counties. However, for the first time in a statewide election, the department’s web site will provide a centralized place to view results as updates become available. More than half a million Tennesseans voted early this year – setting a new record for a state primary election. With all 95 counties reporting their totals for early and absentee voting, 543,296 people have already cast ballots for the Aug. 5 elections. The number of people who voted early this year exceeded the 447,910 who cast ballots early in the August 2006 primary, which was also a gubernatorial election year. This year’s total is more than double the 209,474 who voted early in the August 2008 primary election. “Early voting has become increasingly popular with Tennesseans,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “I am pleased that so many people chose to take advantage of the convenience of early voting, and Tennesseans are taking an active interest in the future of state and country. I encourage every registered voter who hasn't voted yet to be sure to go vote on August 5th." Thousands of issues of old newspapers from across Tennessee will be available to the public online, courtesy of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Using grant funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, the State Library and Archives will make available dozens of urban and rural newspapers from across the state. The State Library and Archives, which is part of the Tennessee Department of State, has been preserving newspapers on microfilm since 1957. The two-year process of converting those microfilmed documents into digital records will be managed by the University of Tennessee. The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) will use a $40,750 grant from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program to develop an online database of the state’s Civil War battlefields that will be available for federal, state and local planning agencies as well as the general public. This project will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to create the database. The database will link information from the Civil War Sourcebook for Tennessee to Civil War maps and documents archived at TSLA. This enhanced resource will be available on TSLA’s section of the Tennessee Department of State web site. Veterans Charity Faces $50,000 in Civil Penalties for False Claims

The Veterans Support Organization (VSO) faces $50,000 in civil penalties following an investigation by the Department of State's Division of Charitable Solicitations and Gaming. The investigation found that VSO violated the state’s charitable solicitations law 10 times while engaging in fundraising efforts for its Tennessee chapter, with each offense carrying a penalty of $5,000. More than 150,000 Tennesseans have already decided to enjoy the convenience of early voting. Through the first five days of early voting, 153,768 people had voted statewide. At that pace, the total number of people who vote early could more than double the 209,474 who voted early for the August 2008 election and exceed the 447,910 who voted early for the August 2006 elections. An upcoming workshop sponsored by the Tennessee State Library and Archives will help aspiring genealogists find out not just who their ancestors were, but how they actually lived. In the workshop, Nashville attorney and genealogical expert Paul R. White will provide tips on how people can transform their ancestors from mere names on old documents into real people who experienced life’s ups and downs with their families, jobs and hobbies. Beginning Friday, July 16, registered voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for the August 5 state primary and county general elections. Secretary of State Tre Hargett is encouraging voters to take advantage of early voting if they wish. “Early voting gives individuals the peace of mind of not worrying about being rushed on Election Day to get to the polls,” Secretary Hargett said. “Many people enjoy the convenience and flexibility of early voting because it allows them to work voting into their busy schedules.” Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins will be kicking off the first day of early voting this Friday by personally casting his own ballot. Coordinator Goins plans to vote at the Davidson County Election Commission office, 800 Second Avenue South in Nashville, at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Representatives from the Tennessee State Library and Archives will be in Nashville on July 16 to record and digitize Civil War memorabilia owned by local residents for a new exhibit. Archivists will be at Fort Negley, 1100 Fort Negley Blvd., from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. that day. During that time, they invite area residents to bring in photographs, documents and other artifacts related to the Civil War. Individuals may call (615) 253-3470 or e-mail to schedule a reservation with the archivists.
