Welcome to the Department of Financial Institutions Banking Division Home Page.
The Bank Division has the legal responsibility for ensuring the Tennessee state-chartered banking system runs on a safe and sound basis. In its supervisory role, the Bank Division periodically examines the financial soundness of all state-chartered banks, savings banks, non-depository trust companies and money transmitters. The staff also examines business and industrial development corporations for compliance with governing statutes. The division is also charged with the responsibility of evaluating applications for new institutions, branches, expanded financial activities and corporate reorganizations.
As of January 31, 2011, the division supervised 157 banks, nine (9) trust companies and two (2) business and industrial development companies. Additionally, the division licensed 64 money transmitters.
