Digital Book Duplication

Project Title: Digital Book Duplication Internship Opportunity: LBPH is looking for a computer-savvy or MLS student, to review, document and potentially upgrade our book duplication work process, including the procedures for both cartridge and cassette duplication and print/braille labeling. If the intern has any expertise with the Linux operating system, she or he could also be assigned to install the Linux-based NLS Gutenberg duplication software. As part of this assignment, the intern could develop a step-by-step written procedure for duplicating books with the Gutenberg application, or with the LBPH’s current Altec duplication system. In addition, the intern would train LBPH library staff on the procedures so the project could continue on an ongoing basis. Time Commitment: This is an internship project that could be offered as a six-week or two-month summer internship working full time, or as a semester-long project, working 8-10 hours per week. Project Title: READS Subject Code Revision Internship Opportunity: LBPH is looking for an MLS or English Literature student with an interest in cataloging and library systems. The intern would assist the department, under staff guidance, in revising the READS system’s subject codes to reflect current reader interests and evolving reading categories or genres. This could also involve revising subject codes on both patron and book records. Time Commitment: This internship could be offered as a six-week or two-month summer internship working fulltime, or as a semester-long project, working 8-10 hours per week. Audit and Reconsiliation of Inventory and Patron Records
Section: Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
Project Title: Audit and Reconciliation of Inventory and Patron Records Internship Opportunity: LBPH is looking for 1-2 accounting interns to audit our records of machine inventory and patron address files, verifying accuracy and correcting issues, as needed. The individual will contact patrons to verify the serial numbers of players assigned to them for the machine records. The second intern will review patron address and telephone number files, verifying accuracy of information with U.S. Postal Service records, CMLS/NLS records and BARD records. Time Commitment: These internships could be offered as six-week or two-month summer internships, working full time, or as semester-long projects, working 8-10 hours per week. Summer Reading Club

Project Title: Summer Reading Club Internship Opportunity: LBPH is looking for an intern with a background in elementary education or children’s library work to create and coordinate a Summer Reading Club for the library’s young patrons, utilizing the statewide summer reading club theme. The intern will create mailings, reading logs, solicit prizes for and maintain records of participants. Time Commitment: This internship could be offered on an annual basis, one day a week from late-March through August. Another possibility would be for a year-round internship, with a children’s and/or young adult club in the summer and adult book club in the winter. . In addition, if the department’s social networking policy allows, this person would maintain a page on facebook, goodreads, or another such online resource for discussion of reading plans. Project Title: Coordination of Missing/Mis-filed Digital and Cassette Books and Cases Volunteer Opportunity: LBPH is looking for a personable volunteer to check or collection of returned audio books with missing and/or misfiled cartridges and cassettes, re-uniting them when possible, contacting patrons for correction, and working with duplication staff and volunteers to replace missing cartridges and cassettes, as needed. Project Title: Telephone Receptionist Volunteer Opportunity: LBPH is looking for a volunteer with good telephone skills to answer the library’s main line on days the LBPH's Administrative Assistant is unavailable. He or she would answer the toll-free and mail line, routing calls and taking messages for other staff, as needed. Time Commitment: Every Friday, from 8:00 – 4:30 except during State Holiday weeks, and other days when Administrative Assistant is on leave. Telephone Receptionist

Project Title: Mailings Volunteer Opportunity: LBPH is looking for a volunteer with manual dexterity skills to fold, stuff, and label overdue notices for patrons. In addition, this volunteer will label large print, plus collate, package and label audio and braille versions of the library’s quarterly newsletter. Time Commitment: One day per month. Volunteer Opportunity: LBPH is looking for a volunteer to make corrections in and additions to our online patron data base and book files. Specifically, the volunteer will go through our online database verifying counties where patrons live and adding reader advisor initials to patron files. In addition, volunteer will go through book records, noting when we own a title in more than one format, noting order of titles in series, adding subtitles to book records, and noting prequels and sequels in book files. Time Commitment: Ongoing.
