Contractors & Home Improvement

Mission

The mission of the Board for Licensing Contractors is to assure quality and fair construction practices exist in all phases of the industry in order to protect the safety and welfare of the public. The Board was originally established in 1931, and today remains a bridge between the consumers and contractors of Tennessee. Licensing offers the consumers a mechanism to voice their concerns.

A contractor's license is required prior to contracting (bidding or negotiating a price) whenever the total cost of the project is $25,000 or more. For licensing information for projects less than $25,000, see “Types of Licenses”.

NEW! Effective April 28, 2017, Public Chapter 237 changed the financial statement requirements for contractor licensing. For more information, see “Financial Statement Changes”.
