COVID-19 INFORMATION

Cosmetology and Barber Examiners

Announcement

Attention all licensees: the 2021 legislative session added a requirement for everyone in the industry to complete the approved training on domestic violence. This goes into effect January 1, 2022. New applicants will be completing the training at their schools. Everyone renewing their license will need to take the link provided below, register with Barbicide, and take the free 20 minute training. You will then receive a certificate to keep for your records. That certificate may be included with your next renewal. Please save it for at least two years because the board has the authority to audit and ask for it. You will not need it after the two year period.

Domestic Violence Training

Per a court order issued by the Davidson County Chancery court on August 5, 2020, the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology & Barber Examiners (Board) is enjoined from enforcing Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-3-110(b)(2) which requires that all master barber registration applicants obtain a high school diploma, GED, or HiSET equivalence. Please note that the director and staff will no longer require that barber schools contain proof of a high school diploma, GED, or HiSET equivalence in a student’s file.  For any question please contact the Board office at Cosmetology.Board@tn.gov . Should this status change the notice on this website will be updated.

Cosmetology and Barber Examiners regulates the practice of cosmetology and barbering, including the licensure and registration of cosmetologists, instructors, aestheticians, manicurists, natural hair stylists, cosmetology shops, master barbers, barber instructors, barber shops, and barber and cosmetology schools.
