Teaching Literacy in Tennessee

Literacy instruction is, and has been, a top priority for teachers and schools across Tennessee. As such, the department has released a suite of resources in support of early literacy instruction.  In 2016, the
department published the Vision for Third Grade Reading Proficiency as a first step toward defining what proficiency looks like for students in the early grades and beyond.

In May 2017, the department released a practical guidance document called Teaching Literacy in Tennessee, which serves as the department’s “how” resource for teaching literacy.  This suite of materials also includes Teaching Literacy in Tennessee:  English Learner Companion and the Dyslexia Resource Guide.
