TWRA Shooting Ranges in Tennessee

The TWRA offers several shooting ranges and hunter education centers throughout the state for public use. In addition, archery ranges and Hunter Education classes are also available at some of the ranges as well, in addition to other services. Be sure to check with each range and center to see what is offered! 

Tier 1

If you do not possess a valid hunting and fishing license you will need to purchase a range permit before shooting.

NOTE: The gun range at Cheatham Wildlife Management Area will be closed on March 21, 2023, for Law Enforcement training. Normal hours will resume on March 22.

Use or possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited. Field points only for archery. Automatic firearms are prohibited. Must purchase the range permit from a TWRA license agent. No permits are available at the range. Fee required. Adult (16 yrs.+): A Type 220, 221 or valid hunting license is required.

The range will open January 6, 2023 on Normal winter hours.

Stones River Hunter Education Centers offers a wide variety of activities for the entire family, including two firearm ranges (1 pistol range and 1 rifle range) and an archery range.   

Hunter Education classes are also periodically taught at the center, and several events take place throughout the year at the center as well.

Rules

·  Firearms must be unloaded & in a case or bag. No open or concealed carry is allowed on range property. 

·  All shotguns must have a stock (no pistol grips) and the only ammunition allowed for shotguns are slugs (no birdshot or buckshot).

·  Eye and ear protection are required for everyone entering the range.

·  Targets are available for purchase at the range for $5 a pack.

·  Pistol range: 15-yard range (30 positions, including 2 wheelchair accessible positions)

·  Rifle range: 100-yard range (18 positions, including 1 wheelchair accessible position)

·  Rifle range: 200-yard range (2 positions)

·  6 target sight-in archery range

Only cash and checks are accepted at the range. If you would like to purchase a permit with a credit/debit card online prior to attending the range, purchase a Type 222 Tier 2 Range Permit for each shooter 16 years of age and older at https://gooutdoorstennessee.com/. Youth under the age of 16 shoot for free.

Rules

  • Patrons are encouraged to make online purchases for range passes to reduce the number of people inside the pro shop.
  • Signage will be posted at the pro shop and at each range reminding patrons to observe social distancing measures and to encourage frequent hand washing.
  • We will limit the number of patrons inside the pro shop at one time to 3 people. We will have taped lines on the floor to encourage proper social distancing.
  • Range capacity will be limited (every other station = 8 ft) to ensure social distancing. Limit 21 shooters on 100 yd range, 14 shooters on paper pistol, 15 shooters on tactical.
  • RSOs will be instructed to radio the pro shop when the range is at capacity. Arriving customers will have the option to take a number and wait in their vehicles for an open slot or return a different day.
  • Handgun carry classes will be held in the backroom and participants will be spaced out by staff to ensure social distancing measures.
