Safe Schools Training
The Office of Safe and Supportive School periodically conducts training across the state. This calendar will be updated regularly to reflect the training schedule.
Building Strong Brains: Strategies for Educators
The department's office of safe and supportive schools has developed a Building Strong Brains: Strategies for Educators training program to empower school leaders and teachers to address chronic childhood trauma, or what experts call adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), in the school and classroom. The Building Strong Brains: Strategies for Educators training program is a fundamental aspect of the department's goal to provide support to school districts to recognize and address ACEs and to promote healing and resilience in order to help all students succeed in school and in life.
If your district would be interested in hosting a workshop for school personnel please contact Pat Conner at Pat.Conner@tn.gov.
Tennessee Schools PREPARE Training for Emergency Management
The department is offering a training opportunity to school districts to help improve the response and recovery portion of their emergency management plan. Tennessee Schools PREPARE is a free 3 hour training, which provides best practices in a “postvention” crisis plan, leadership before a crisis, skills for “postvention” team members, and methods for building resilience in youth.
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Training
The department, in partnership with the Tennessee AWARE project, will be offering free training to adults who regularly interact with adolescents ages 12-18. This training aims to promote competency among youth-serving adults to detect and respond to youth mental health concerns.
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a 7.5 hour public education program that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents. In addition, it builds an understanding of the importance of intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. YMHFA training is designed for all youth-serving adults, including teachers, school staff, coaches, youth group leaders, parents, extended learning directors, school staff, etc. To learn more about YMHFA, visit www.MentalHealthFirstAid.org.
