Oak Ridge Reservation Clean-up

Oak Ridge Reservation Map

The Division of Remediation’s Oak Ridge Office (DoR OR) oversees all U. S.  Department of Energy (DOE) environmental protection and restoration activities on the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). The reservation is on the EPA National Priority List of Superfund sites and is the focus of one of the largest environmental cleanup efforts in the United States. DoR OR staff members review all DOE remediation work and conduct independent monitoring of the air, water, soil and wildlife, both on and off the reservation. By ensuring that remediation efforts meet Tennessee and federal environmental standards, DoR OR plays a vital role in protecting the public’s health and the natural resources of Roane and Anderson Counties.

From May 13, 1991 until November 29, 2017, DoR OR worked under the Tennessee Oversight Agreement (TOA) and the Federal Facility Agreement (FFA) to accomplish their duties. The TOA was a voluntary agreement originally entered into between DOE and the State of Tennessee.

On December 1, 2017, the TOA was replaced by the DOE-TN Oak Ridge Reservation Environmental Surveillance Oversight Agreement. This document outlines DOE's technical and financial support for DoR OR activities. The FFA is continuing as a tri-party agreement between the State, DOE, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under a temporary Memorandum of Agreement. The FFA allows collaboration and cooperation between the three groups to make the best decisions possible on cleanup of the hazardous, radioactive and mixed wastes at the site.

DoR OR staff members develop an annual Environmental Monitoring Work Plan. This plan outlines DoR OR’s specific projects and goals for the upcoming state fiscal year, extending from July 1 until June 30. This plan includes any continuing and routine efforts from the previous year, and also includes new areas of investigation.

DoR OR staff members also produce an annual Environmental Monitoring Report. This report illustrates the results from DoR OR’s annual monitoring, sampling and testing activities. These reports, their supporting information and data, as well as previous years’ documents and other reports on special topics and completed projects, are available at the DoR Oak Ridge Office during the regular business hours of 8:00 – 4:30 Eastern Time.

The U. S. Department of Energy provides an annual Remediation Effectiveness Report for the public, which is their assessment of efforts at the Reservation during the previous year.
