The Tennessee Department of Health has undertaken a project to upgrade the system our state uses to maintain death, birth, marriage, and divorce records. The project, Vital Records Information System Management (VRISM), will result in a user-friendly system that allows for electronic communication between the Tennessee Office of Vital Records and those partners who help to register vital events that occur in Tennessee. The new system is a web-based, electronic system and will replace the predominantly manual, paper-based process currently in use.
The new system will significantly reduce the time between the occurrence and registration of vital events.
-Starting in April of 2017, VRISM Issuance enabled local health departments to issue birth and death certificates statewide at your local health department office.
-The VRISM Electronic Death Registration System is expected to be fielded beginning on September 15th. Field Representatives are training funeral directors, hospices, physicians, and medical examiners at locations throughout the State.
Death certificates are the source of data for regional, state, and national mortality statistics and are used to allocate funding for scientific research, direct public health efforts, and assess the efficacy of preventative initiatives. In addition, a completed death certificate is required before a body can be buried or cremated, and is necessary for survivors to collect insurance benefits, transfer property, and payments to the decedent’s heirs. The new system is paperless and user-friendly. The system is fast and results in improved data quality.
-VRISM will continue to develop the “Birth Module” which will allow immediate registration of
births in the state of Tennessee.
This web page will serve as a source of information for the public about the progress of the VRISM project.
Training is available to Physicians, Medical Examiners, Funeral Directors and their staffs Monday through Friday both on line and at locations throughout the state including evenings.
