Virtual Chattanooga Human Rights Day Celebration
CHATTANOOGA, TN – The Chattanooga International Human Rights Day celebration will be held virtually on Thursday, December 10, 2020, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. EST. This year’s theme is Promoting Civility in Uncertain Times. The event commemorates the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on December 10, 1948.
Ronald Harris, Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) will be the guest speaker for the celebration. Mr. Harris’ role at BCBST is to cultivate a corporate culture where diversity and inclusion are aligned with the company’s corporate strategies and values. He has served in various management roles at BCBST for 30 years and is also a co-founder of the BlueCross BlueShield Association Diversity Alliance.
THRC Board Chair Robin Derryberry said, “Civility has never been more important than it is at this time in our nation’s history. We’re excited to welcome Ron Harris from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee as he shares insights into promoting civility during times like these. The Chattanooga International Human Rights Day planning committee is comprised of several organizations in Tennessee who support and advocate for human and civil rights for all. Partnering organizations include: The Tennessee Human Rights Commission, Hamilton County, City of Chattanooga, Derryberry Public Relations, the Diocese of East TN, Street Grace, Chattanooga Family Justice Center, Unity Group of Chattanooga and UT-Chattanooga.
The Tennessee Human Rights Commission is an independent state agency responsible for enforcing the state’s anti-discrimination laws, which prohibit discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation and coordinates compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The Commission's role is to enforce and prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation based on race, creed, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age (40 and over in employment), familial status (housing only) and retaliation in employment, housing and public accommodations.
