Colonel Steven D. Barney was born in Muskegon, Michigan. He is a 1985 graduate of Dresden High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee at Martin as well as a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA.
He enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1984 with the 1174th Transportation Company in Dresden, Tennessee. He completed Officer Candidate School in 1988 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Transportation Corps in June of 1988.

Colonel Barney’s deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005) and Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn 2011.
Colonel Barney is a graduate of the Transportation Officer Basic Course, Transportation Officer Advanced Course (Resident), Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College-Intermediate Level Education (Resident) as well as a 2016 graduate of the United States Army War College.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, as well as the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device.
Colonel Barney is currently employed as the Commander/Administrative Officer for the 230th Sustainment Brigade, He also served as Deputy G4, G4 Logistics Management Officer, Supply and Services Officer as well as the Installation Transportation Officer for several years as well. Prior to accepting these positions, he was employed by the State of Tennessee in a variety of capacities.
