Brigadier General Kurtis J. Winstead

Brigadier General Kurtis J. Winstead serves as the Director of the Joint Staff Army Element - Army for the state of Tennessee.  He reports directly to the Adjutant General for Joint Force matters and assists in the external affairs functions including: presenting and enforcing National Guard policies, plans, and programs.  As the Director of the Joint Staff he presides over the National Guard Staff and represents Army and Air capabilities, requirements, policy, plans, and programs in joint operations.  Under the authority of the Adjutant General, the Director of the Joint Staff also designates personnel and resources.

General Winstead’s career began late 1990 during soldier preparations in support of “Desert Storm” starting in January 1991. General Winstead direct commissioned as a 1stLieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corp, assigned to the 194th Engineer Brigade, Tennessee Army National Guard. General Winstead served as the Command Judge Advocate, 194th Engineer Brigade, during Operation Iraqi Freedom III 2004-2006, Iraq.
